A Busy Life

The Woman from the Boutique

Lili had gone into the Greenwich Village boutique to look at a pair of jeans. That was the original plan. Jeans, perhaps a fitted top if something caught her attention, then coffee. A normal afternoon with a normal list. The plan survived for about seven minutes.

She was wearing a fitted white T-shirt with low-rise jeans. The shirt had shifted while she was sorting through a rack, leaving a narrow strip of her waist exposed. Lili noticed it and left it where it was. She had begun enjoying these tiny wardrobe rebellions. A shirt moved. A belly button appeared. Someone looked. The world continued.

The woman noticed from across the rack.

She was older than Lili, beautifully dressed and far too comfortable looking directly at people. Her gaze settled on Lili’s waist for a second, moved up to her face, then returned to the small vertical hollow at the centre of her stomach.

Woman: “You have a beautiful belly button.”

Lili looked down as if she needed to verify that it was still there.

Lili: “That is a very specific compliment.”

Woman: “Specific compliments are usually the honest ones.”

Lili: “Do you inspect everyone this carefully?”

Woman: “Only when I find something worth inspecting.”

The woman stepped closer. She did it without hurry, which somehow made Lili more aware of the distance disappearing between them.

Woman: “Have you ever considered piercing it?”

Lili: “A few times. Then I remember there is a needle involved.”

Woman: “The needle lasts a second. The effect lasts much longer.”

Lili: “You sound like you have given this speech before.”

Woman: “I have admired many piercings. I have only offered to take one woman to the parlour.”

Lili: “And that woman is someone you met beside the discounted denim?”

Woman: “There are worse ways to meet.”

Lili laughed. She should have returned to the jeans. She knew that. The woman knew it too, which was likely why she waited without adding another sales pitch.

Lili: “Where is this place?”

Woman: “Two streets away.”

Lili: “Of course it is.”

The parlour looked closer to a jewellery salon than the tattoo shops Lili had imagined. Glass cases displayed gold rings, tiny diamonds and delicate curved bars. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic. Lili immediately became aware that she had followed a woman whose name she still did not know into a place containing needles.

Lili: “I should probably know what to call you before someone makes a hole in me.”

The woman smiled and introduced herself, then took Lili’s hand and led her toward the display.

Woman: “Choose something small. Your navel has a narrow shape. Too much jewellery would fight with it.”

Lili: “You have apparently completed the inspection already.”

Woman: “I was thorough.”

Lili chose a small silver stud with a clear stone. It was discreet until the light reached it, then it flashed. That suited her. A secret with poor discipline.

The piercer examined her navel, explained the placement and marked the point above the upper fold. Lili lay back and lifted the bottom of her T-shirt. The woman stood beside the chair, holding her hand as though this had been arranged days ago.

Lili: “If I crush your fingers, this was your idea.”

Woman: “You can blame me all evening.”

Lili: “All evening?”

Woman: “I am optimistic.”

The pinch arrived, sharp and brief. Lili inhaled, gripped the woman’s hand and stared at the ceiling. A moment later the silver stone sat above her navel.

She stood before the mirror and studied it. The jewellery changed very little and somehow changed everything. Her waist looked more deliberate. Her exposed stomach no longer seemed accidental, even though the shirt had moved by itself.

Woman: “I knew it.”

Lili: “You seem pleased with yourself.”

Woman: “I am pleased with you.”

Outside, Greenwich Village had reached that late-afternoon hour when every doorway looked inviting and every bar claimed to have invented cocktails. Lili and the woman walked without choosing a destination. Their hands brushed twice. On the third time, the woman took Lili’s hand and kept it.

Lili: “Is this part of the aftercare?”

Woman: “The premium package.”

Lili: “I do not remember paying for that.”

Woman: “You can settle the account later.”

They stopped outside a narrow brownstone. The woman climbed one step, still holding Lili’s hand.

Woman: “Come upstairs. I have wine, and you need somewhere comfortable to recover from your ordeal.”

Lili: “That ordeal lasted one second.”

Woman: “Then come upstairs and tell me how brave you were.”

Lili looked at the dark doorway, then at the woman’s hand around hers.

Lili: “This is your lair, isn’t it?”

Woman: “I prefer apartment.”

Lili: “People with apartments invite you for coffee. Women with lairs get you pierced first.”

The woman laughed and pulled her gently up the first step.

Woman: “You can still have coffee.”

Lili: “That was not the reassuring answer you thought it was.”

Lili followed her inside anyway.

The apartment was dim, elegant and full of furniture that looked chosen one piece at a time. The woman poured two glasses of wine while Lili stood near the window, her fingers hovering near the new stud without touching it.

Woman: “Do you like it?”

Lili: “I keep looking at it.”

Woman: “So do I.”

The woman came to stand behind her. Their reflection shared the dark window. She placed the wine on the table, moved Lili’s ponytail away from her shoulder and let her fingers rest there.

Lili: “You planned this from the boutique.”

Woman: “I hoped.”

Lili turned. The new silver stone caught the last light from the window. The woman looked down at it once, then met Lili’s eyes.

Lili: “You got me into your lair.”

Woman: “And you made fun of me the entire way.”

Lili: “That is how I preserve my dignity.”

Woman: “Is it working?”

Lili: “No.”

Their mouths met. Lili’s hand settled at the woman’s waist. The wine remained untouched on the table, which was probably the most predictable event of the afternoon.

The bedroom door closed behind them.

Amanda’s Piercing

Lili arrived at Jessie’s apartment expecting coffee and the usual interrogation. Jessie had other plans. She had invited Jason and Amanda over, which she revealed only after Lili was already inside and could no longer invent an appointment.

Jessie opened the door in torn denim shorts and a fitted white Diesel T-shirt. Her small navel piercing showed beneath the cropped hem. Lili wore a fitted top and jeans, with her silver stud visible whenever she moved.

Lili: “You said coffee.”

Jessie: “There is coffee.”

Lili: “You omitted the audience.”

Jessie: “They are people, Lili. You have met people before.”

Jason was relaxed and immediately amused by their argument. Amanda was quieter. She had long dark hair, a fitted tank and the kind of curious expression that made it obvious she was listening to everything.

Jessie performed introductions, handed Lili a cup and then watched the four of them as if she had arranged an experiment.

Jason: “Jessie told us you would complain about being ambushed.”

Lili: “Jessie uses friendship as a delivery system.”

Jessie: “And yet you keep accepting the packages.”

Amanda laughed. Her attention moved to the silver stone above Lili’s navel.

Amanda: “How long have you had that?”

Lili: “Long enough to forget the needle. Briefly.”

Amanda: “I have been thinking about getting one.”

Jessie: “She has been thinking about it for six months.”

Jason: “Seven. We have passed the thinking stage and entered committee review.”

Amanda: “I wanted to see how it looked on someone with a similar navel.”

Lili stepped nearer. Amanda studied the placement, then glanced up with a small embarrassed smile.

Lili: “You can look. It has survived worse attention.”

Amanda: “Did it hurt?”

Lili: “For one second. Then I spent the rest of the day admiring myself in every reflective object I passed.”

Jessie: “She still does that.”

Lili: “Your friendship is becoming expensive.”

The conversation moved from jewellery to dating, then from dating to the areas people usually reach after a second drink. Jessie and Jason supplied commentary. Amanda and Lili gradually stopped hearing them.

Amanda: “Jessie says you have been exploring.”

Lili gave Jessie a look across the room.

Lili: “Jessie says many things that should remain inside Jessie.”

Jessie: “I provided a tasteful summary.”

Amanda: “It is fine. I am exploring too.”

Lili: “Men?”

Amanda: “Men. Women. The occasional poor decision.”

Lili: “That sounds familiar.”

Amanda: “I do not think I am one hundred percent straight.”

Lili: “Neither do I.”

They held each other’s eyes a fraction longer than the conversation required. Jessie noticed. Jessie noticed everything, especially when noticing allowed her to interfere later.

Amanda picked up her phone.

Amanda: “Give me your number. You can stop me from escaping the piercing appointment.”

Lili: “I might help you escape.”

Amanda: “Then I will choose the direction.”

The next day, they met inside an upscale piercing parlour. Lili wore black leggings, a short sports bra and an open hoodie. Her silver stud was still in place. Amanda wore leggings and a loose tank that she could fold above her waist for the examination. She had no jewellery yet.

The piercer was a tattooed, non-Asian man with calm hands and the reassuring habit of explaining an instrument before bringing it anywhere near a person.

He asked Amanda to stand beneath the examination light. She folded her tank up and held it there while he studied the shape and upper fold of her navel. He used a sterilized assessment needle as a guide, checking depth and the path the jewellery would follow without piercing her yet.

Amanda looked down, then at Lili.

Amanda: “So what do you think?”

Piercer: “You have enough of an upper shelf for a traditional upper-navel piercing. A short curved bar will sit well. I would begin with a small stone and leave room for swelling.”

Amanda: “That sounded suspiciously easy.”

Piercer: “The anatomy is easy. You are the part that keeps moving.”

Lili: “She has been moving for seven months.”

Amanda: “You have known me for one day and already joined their side.”

Lili: “I go where the evidence takes me.”

Amanda chose a small silver curved bar with a pale stone. She lay back while the piercer marked the placement and prepared the sterile needle. Lili stood beside the chair.

Amanda: “Distract me.”

Lili: “Jessie thinks we are going to sleep together.”

Amanda turned her head so quickly the piercer asked her to stay still.

Amanda: “That worked.”

Lili: “I am excellent in emergencies.”

Amanda: “What did you tell her?”

Lili: “I told her to mind her business. She interpreted that as confirmation.”

Piercer: “Take a breath.”

Amanda inhaled. The needle passed through the marked fold. Her fingers closed around Lili’s hand, and then it was finished. The piercer secured the curved bar and moved the mirror into place.

Amanda stood carefully. The new stone rested above her navel.

Amanda: “Oh. I love it.”

Lili: “You will now check every mirror in Manhattan.”

Amanda: “You were right.”

Lili: “Please repeat that when Jessie is present.”

Lili had booked an aftercare appointment of her own. The piercer asked her to stand beneath the light and raise the front of her sports bra slightly. He unscrewed the silver stud and removed it with a careful downward movement. For the first time since the original appointment, her navel was bare except for the tiny healed openings above it.

He inspected the channel for redness, swelling or discharge.

Piercer: “No infection. The channel looks healthy. There is a little buildup around the lower opening, which is common with fitted workout clothing.”

Lili: “So my leggings have betrayed me.”

Amanda: “It is always the clothing.”

The piercer saturated sterile gauze with saline and gently treated the upper and lower openings. He rotated the gauze rather than rubbing the skin, then flushed the channel and dried the surrounding area.

Amanda watched with the fascinated expression of someone who had acquired a new responsibility ten minutes earlier.

Amanda: “I have to do all of that?”

Piercer: “Twice a day with saline. Leave the jewellery alone between treatments.”

Lili: “You wanted the piercing. It comes with homework.”

Amanda: “Will you supervise?”

Lili looked at her. Amanda’s question was playful. Her eyes were not.

Lili: “You seem to require a great deal of supervision.”

Amanda: “I was hoping you would notice.”

The piercer reinserted Lili’s stud and secured it. The two women pulled their tops back into place, paid and stepped outside together. Amanda immediately glanced at her reflection in the parlour window.

Lili: “First mirror.”

Amanda: “You are counting?”

Lili: “Until coffee.”

Amanda: “And after coffee?”

Lili: “We will see which direction you choose.”

Amanda smiled and slipped her hand through Lili’s arm. They walked away from the parlour together, both trying to avoid looking too pleased with the day. Neither succeeded.

Fifteen Minutes Away

Marcus, a fit Black man with an easy smile, had noticed Lili at the gym before anyone introduced them. This was not difficult. She trained in black leggings and a short sports bra beneath an open hoodie, her dark hair pulled into a ponytail and a small silver stone above her navel. She was very slim, focused and almost completely unaware of the effect she had whenever she crossed the weight floor.

Almost.

Her coach caught Marcus looking more than once. Eventually he decided to interfere, a hobby that coaches appear to develop once counting repetitions loses its excitement.

Lili had finished a cable row when her coach waved Marcus over.

Coach: “Lili, this is Marcus. Marcus, this is the woman who keeps pretending she does not need rest days.”

Lili: “That is a hostile introduction.”

Marcus: “I have seen you train. I think he is afraid of you.”

Coach: “Good. You already understand the relationship.”

Marcus offered his hand. Lili took it. His grip was warm, his smile easy and his attention stayed on her face even though the silver stone at her waist was doing its best to become involved.

Marcus: “Do you ever train with anyone else?”

Lili: “Only if they can keep up.”

Marcus: “That sounds like a challenge.”

Lili: “It was an observation. You turned it into a challenge.”

Her coach arranged happy hour for the three of them a few evenings later. He described it as a casual drink. Lili recognized a setup when it arrived wearing casual clothing, yet she went.

She chose a fitted black Diesel button-front shirt, fully buttoned over her chest and tied in a compact double knot at her waist. The restrained opening beneath the knot showed a narrow band of pale stomach and her navel. Fitted blue jeans flared subtly below her knees. Black open-toe heels, a small white shoulder bag and a sleek ponytail completed the outfit.

It looked effortless. It had taken forty minutes.

Marcus was already at the high-top when she arrived. His expression told her the forty minutes had been used wisely.

Marcus: “You look different outside the gym.”

Lili: “I am wearing the same number of clothes.”

Coach: “She rehearsed that answer in the cab.”

Lili: “Why are you here?”

Coach: “Supervision.”

The conversation began with training because it was the one subject all three could discuss without admitting why they were there. Marcus asked about her routine. Lili described legs, core and mobility. Her coach added corrections whenever the story became too flattering.

At one point Lili’s hairband slipped from her hand and fell beside the table. She bent to retrieve it. The tied shirt pulled against her waist, then settled slightly higher when she stood. She looked down, adjusted the knot once and decided to leave it.

Marcus noticed. His attempt to hide this was respectable and unsuccessful.

Lili: “You can look. Pretending makes it more obvious.”

Marcus: “I was trying to behave.”

Lili: “How is that going?”

Marcus: “Poorly.”

Later he asked what she had been working on most.

Lili: “Mostly legs and core. Mobility when he manages to convince me.”

Coach: “She says that as though I have any control over what she does.”

Marcus: “Whatever you are doing is working. Your stomach is incredibly flat.”

The compliment made Lili glance down at her exposed waist and navel. She smiled before looking back up.

Lili: “I suppose this shirt is leaving me nowhere to hide.”

Coach: “Do not give the shirt credit. That is years of consistency.”

Marcus: “I can tell.”

Lili held his gaze. She had recently developed a particular curiosity about what happened behind closed doors, and Jessie had told her she was incapable of making a subtle pass. Lili decided to test the accusation.

Lili: “I have been learning that I enjoy things becoming a little intense from behind.”

Marcus: “Heavy Romanian deadlifts?”

Lili stared at him.

Lili: “Something like that.”

Coach: “She is excellent at those too.”

Lili: “Thank you for rescuing him.”

Marcus: “Did I miss something?”

Lili: “Completely.”

Her coach waited until Marcus turned toward the bar, then leaned close to Lili.

Coach: “I have an early morning. You will survive without me?”

Lili: “Yes. I kind of like him.”

Coach: “I noticed.”

Lili: “Go.”

The coach announced his departure and advised Marcus to discuss something beyond exercise. Marcus objected that he had been doing well. Lili graded him as reasonably successful. This seemed to offend him more than it should have.

As the coach walked away, Marcus stepped closer. His lowered hand brushed Lili’s. Neither moved.

Marcus: “Reasonably successful?”

Lili: “You missed one thing.”

Marcus: “Should I ask what?”

Lili: “Perhaps later.”

She turned and leaned her back against him. Marcus stood behind her and wrapped one arm around her waist. The movement lifted the sides of her tied shirt by a fraction, leaving two tiny gaps above her jeans while the navel remained visible beneath the knot.

Lili tilted her face toward his.

Lili: “Where do you think we should go next?”

Marcus: “My place is fifteen minutes away.”

Their lips hovered close. Lili smiled.

Lili: “I like that idea.”

Marcus raised one hand beneath her chin. She looked into his eyes and closed the remaining distance.

His apartment was quiet and carefully arranged. Lili became shy as soon as the door closed, which annoyed her because she had spent the entire cab ride behaving like a woman who had never experienced shyness.

Marcus put her white bag away and led her toward the bedroom. Lili stopped near the foot of the bed.

Lili: “I cannot believe I am doing this.”

Marcus: “You are going to feel good. You will be glad you came.”

She looked around, suddenly aware that she had arrived with yesterday’s confidence and no overnight clothing.

Lili: “I did not bring anything. I was not expecting to spend the night.”

Marcus: “I have something for you.”

He opened a drawer and returned with a cream silk set: low-rise short shorts and a loose cropped tank. The top would leave her entire midriff and silver stud exposed.

Lili: “You keep women’s silk pajamas in your bedroom?”

Marcus: “They are new.”

Lili: “That answer created more questions.”

Marcus: “Try them on first. Interrogate me later.”

Lili changed and stepped barefoot from the bedroom. The silk tank moved loosely around her ribs and ended well above the shorts. Marcus had changed into navy pajamas. He looked at her with open appreciation.

Lili: “You are staring again.”

Marcus: “I wanted you from the second I saw you at the gym.”

Lili: “That quickly?”

He moved behind her and held her at the waist. Lili rested her hands over his arms and turned her face toward him.

Marcus: “Your body, the way you moved, the way you carried yourself. I could not stop thinking about having you here.”

Lili: “And now?”

Marcus: “Now you are here.”

Lili: “I am.”

Their mouths met again. Marcus drew the curtains. Lili’s cream silk top fell across the chair a little later, followed by the navy pajama shirt. The room went dark, and the fifteen-minute suggestion became an overnight stay.

In the morning, Lili dressed in the black tied shirt and jeans, slipped on her heels and left with her white bag over one shoulder. She felt happy, satisfied and mildly astonished by herself.

She called her doctor while walking home. She had followed his instructions, using the prescribed cream before and after intercourse along with plenty of lubricant. The irritation she had worried about had not returned.

Lili: “I wanted to update you. I feel completely fine this morning. No irritation or soreness after intercourse.”

Doctor: “That is reassuring. Following the treatment plan appears to have helped. Call if you notice pain, irritation or bleeding.”

Lili: “I will. I am very relieved.”

After the call, the movement of walking shifted her tied shirt slightly higher. Her navel appeared beneath the knot again. She looked down, laughed and called Jessie.

Jessie: “You are calling suspiciously early.”

Lili: “You might be happy to hear that I am officially on a walk of shame.”

Jessie: “You went home with him?”

Lili: “Apparently.”

Jessie: “Apparently? Lili, you are walking home in yesterday’s clothes.”

Lili: “I can see the evidence.”

They both began laughing.

Jessie: “You sound pleased with yourself.”

Lili: “I am trying to sound ashamed. It is going badly.”

Jessie: “Was he worth it?”

Lili looked down at the silver stone flashing in the morning light.

Lili: “Yes. He was worth it.”
