Lili woke up already too warm.
The apartment had trapped the night inside it. The sheet clung to one leg, her hair clung to her neck, and the small fan by the window had spent eight hours moving warm air from one side of the room to the other. A heroic effort with no measurable result.
The yoga pavilion stood at the edge of the hotel garden, open to the warm morning air and the sound of water moving through a narrow stone channel. Lili arrived carrying a cork mat and a bottle of water.
By the time Lili and Jessie reached their hotel, Pattaya had already made one thing clear: the heat was going to participate in every decision.
Lili had gone into the Greenwich Village boutique to look at a pair of jeans. That was the original plan. Jeans, perhaps a fitted top if something caught her attention, then coffee. A normal afternoon with a normal list. The plan survived for about seven minutes.
** A hot day in June. **
Lili picks up the phone and dials the number a friend of her’s recommended. As the line connects, she hears the soft, calming voice of the receptionist.
